Detoxifying Tropical Green Smoothie

As we step into the new year, the fitness and health craze kicks into high gear across the planet. While I’m not a supporter of crazy diets, calorie restriction, or all the other unhealthy forms of deprivation that we see everywhere this time of year, I do like to load up on all the green goodness come January (and every other month ;).

If this idea resonates with you, but you aren’t sure how to get those greens in, try adding them to smoothies! Start with baby spinach, which has the mildest taste, and go from there. Even after many years of drinking green smoothies, baby spinach is still my number one choice when adding greens to smoothies!

This detoxifying tropical green smoothie recipe is very quick and easy. It’s a perfect starter recipe for anyone who is interested in trying out green smoothies but doesn’t know where to start. On top of that, it tastes like heaven in a glass!

So what are you waiting for?

Detoxifying Tropical Green Smoothie

Serves 2 | Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana (use a frozen one if you want a colder smoothie)
  • 1 navel orange
  • A large handful ripe pineapple
  • 1 baby cucumber (or half a regular cucumber)
  • 1 large handful baby spinach
  • 5-10 sprigs fresh parsley (stems included)
  • 5-10 sprigs fresh coriander (stems included)
  • 1/2 inch nob fresh ginger
  • 1/2 a lemon, juiced
  • 2 TBSP shelled hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp spirulina powder
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1-1.5 cups filtered water

Start by prepping your produce: peel the orange and separate it into segments; peel and cube the pineapple (reserve the rest for snacking later!); slice the cucumber into large chunks; wash the parsley and coriander; peel the ginger if it’s not organic. Feel free to leave everything in large pieces, the blender will take care of the rest!

Now add everything to your blender, starting with the produce and working your way down the list. A Vitamix will give you the smoothest texture, but any blender will do!

The amount of liquid you add is up to you. I prefer my smoothies more liquidy and have set the quantities to my preference, but feel free to adjust them to suit your taste.

Secure the lid firmly and blend away! You want the different components of this smoothie to combine and form a smooth consistency, so keep blending until you can’t see any more individual ingredients.

And that’s it! Enjoy this detoxifying tropical green smoothie first thing, as a midmorning or afternoon snack, or pre or post-workout. There really is no bad time to drink it!
